Being an artist is a lifelong journey and no one epitomizes this more than Carol Compton, the November Spotlight Artist at the Downtown Art Gallery, 335 S. Washington in downtown Titusville.
Carol grew up on the West Coast, inspired by an artist uncle and her father, who took her on his business travels where they always visited museums and art shows. Her family always made sure she had abundant art supplies for her explorations. Moving to Florida, her career became homeschooling her eleven children. Carol'sx curriculum stressed nature and art as a component of all subjects. Soon she was offering art classes to homeschool groups and later at several local parochial schools.
Carol somehow found time to take art classes at local colleges and was soon winning awards for her basketry. That was followed by drawing and painting classes. But she missed the tactile feel that baskets had provided and found new challenges when she studied ceramics at Eastern Florida State College.
Carol says, ” I love the tactile feeling as a lump of clay spins into a functional piece , which then gets colors and designs in the glazing process. It’s an organic mystery as fire turns dirt and water into something permanent and beautiful. I hope the owner of my pieces enjoys some of that emotion as they cradle a bowl in their hands and add beauty to their everyday life.”
Carol’s pottery is on view at the Downtown Art Gallery Monday thru Saturday 11am to 3pm or by appointment. This amazing art gallery, which also offers printing and framing services, features the work of 19 local artists with an emphasis on Florida themes.
