Bookmaking by Hand at Fiber Guild Meeting, May 27

The Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists will meet at 10 am on Saturday , May 27, at the Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N. Courtenay Parkway. Jeannie McCormack will lead a workshop in “Bookmaking”
There are many different methods of binding books by hand. The finished book, no matter what type of binding is used, is a unique piece of functional art. The cover is usually embellished by the maker to express their own individual style. The stitching is a prominent element of the book, making it of special interest to fiber artists.
The workshop at May’s guild meeting will cover creating a sewn bound book, approximately 4”x5” with 20 pages, using a traditional Japanese stab binding method. All materials, including the pre-punched paper and cover material, needles, thread and glue will be provided. Participants will need to bring scissors, small needle nose pliers and embellishments for decorating the cover, if desired.
Jeanie McCormack learned to sew, embroider, and crochet as a preteen, learning from her mom and a very special next-door neighbor. She started sewing her clothes in Jr High which led to quilting and making sewn and fabric books. A recent guild class in marbling paper has rekindled her interest in bookmaking.

Jeanie’s other interests in fiber arts include weaving and spinning. She presently is a teacher at Knit and Stitch Boutique in Cocoa Village. Her classes are give students an opportunity to weave on a floor loom and to complete an item during the class.

Since 1983 SCW&FA has been Brevard’s go to guild for fiber arts: spinning, weaving, basketry, rug hooking, and more.  The guild helps fiber artists, beginning or advanced, learn through workshops and the informal exchange of ideas. They also work to educate the public about the fiber arts.  Meetings are free and open to the public.  For more information call Jeanie McCormack at 321-266-1610.
